Rotation Yield: Why Rotating More Does Not Mean More Fresh IPs

DoubleProx customers rotate a lot. That is the whole point of the product: a dashboard button, a rotation link and an API that swap your carrier address in seconds, as often as your job needs. So it surprises people when we say that rotating more does not, by itself, get you more IPs. A rotation asks the carrier's gateway for another address out of a finite regional block. It cannot produce an address that block does not hold. What rotation controls is how quickly you walk through the block and how often you land on an address you have already used. This guide explains yield, the two axes that matter, how to match your cadence to the pool you are actually sitting on, and when the right move is a different carrier or city rather than a faster timer.

A rotation is a request, not a factory

Every DoubleProx proxy is one modem or phone with one physical SIM, in a rack we run in one of eight US metros. When you rotate, the modem drops its data session and attaches again, and the carrier's gateway for that region assigns a public address from the block it manages for that APN. The block is finite. It belongs to that carrier, at that gateway, for that metro, and it is shared behind carrier grade NAT with a great many ordinary phones at the same time.

That is the mental model to keep: your line does not have access to a national ocean of addresses. It draws from one regional block, and every rotation is a new draw from the same block. Draw often enough and you will see the same addresses come around again. Nothing about the timer changes how many addresses are in the block, and the gateway does not reward frequent detaches with new territory.

Count is cheap, yield is what you paid for

Take one line and rotate it every two minutes for a day. Then take the same line, on the same pool, and rotate it once an hour. The first run produces a much longer list of addresses, and on paper the pool looks deeper. It is the same pool. All that changed is how many draws you made. Raw counts reward whoever rotates hardest, which is why we never quote a headline count as if it were a property of the line.

The useful measure is yield: out of the rotations you performed, how many landed on an address you had not held before. A line with a high yield gives you something new nearly every time you ask. A line with a low yield hands the same handful of addresses back in a loop, and no amount of extra rotation fixes that. Heavy rotation on a shallow block is just churn: more detaches, more seconds spent re-attaching, and the same addresses reappearing on your list.

Two axes that move independently

When customers say a line rotates well, they usually mean one of two different things. The first is long-run depth: over a week or a quarter, how many distinct addresses does the line uncover. The second is short-term freshness: when you rotate right now, how likely is it that the new address is one you held in the last day. A line can be deep and still feel repetitive on a given afternoon, because the gateway happens to be cycling through a small set at that hour. Another line can feel fresh all day and still flatten out over a month.

Depth is a property of the block and of how the gateway walks it. Freshness is a property of the moment: how loaded the pool is, how many other devices released addresses recently, and how long your own detach lasted. Judge the two separately, because the fix for a shallow line is different from the fix for a line that is merely repeating itself this hour.

Matching your cadence to the pool

As a rule of thumb, not a measurement, a single carrier line rotated many times a day tends to turn up a few hundred distinct addresses in its first week and low thousands over a quarter. The discovery curve is steep in the first days and flattens as the line has seen most of what its gateway routinely hands out. It never quite stops, because carriers rebalance blocks and addresses come and go, but the easy gains are early.

That curve tells you how to set the timer. If your job needs a new address per task, rotate per task and accept that a share of rotations will repeat once the line matures. If your job needs a new address per hour, a two-minute timer is doing nothing for you except adding re-attach gaps. If a rotation returns the same address, the honest fix is not a faster timer. Stay offline a little longer before re-attaching so another device can claim the address, or simply rotate once more. Support can adjust the detach duration on a line for you. The exact number a line yields depends on carrier, metro and cadence, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Rotate-again-on-repeat as a script pattern

Most DoubleProx power users automate this rather than watching a dashboard. The pattern is small and works with the rotation link or the API. It treats a repeated address as a normal event, not an error, and it keeps your automation from hammering the modem.

Keep the memory short and the retry count small. Three attempts is plenty. If a line keeps repeating after that, the block is busy or shallow right now, and the cure lives outside your script.

When to move carrier or city instead

The lever that actually changes depth is carrier and location, not your rotation settings. The same carrier runs a different block in every metro, and the three carriers behave differently within one metro. In our racks Verizon lines tend to hand out a fresh address readily, AT&T lines tend to be stickier and revisit addresses more often, and T-Mobile varies a great deal from one city to the next. Those are tendencies, not promises, and they shift as carriers reshuffle their gateways.

So when a line's yield is low and rotating again does not help, ask for a different line rather than a faster timer. It gives you a longer list, not a deeper pool. Both cadences draw from the same regional block at the same gateway. The faster timer just makes more draws, so it reaches the repeats sooner. Judge a line by how many rotations land on a fresh address, not by how long the list gets.

Why did my rotation return the exact same address?

On a lightly loaded pool nobody claimed the address during the seconds your modem was detached, so the gateway handed it back. That is a healthy quiet pool, not a failed rotation. Stay offline a little longer before re-attaching, rotate again, or ask support to lengthen the detach on that line.
